La exhalación de la muerte. La aportación del matemático Benito Bails a la polémica sobre los cementerios en el siglo XVIII

Abstract

Durante los años ochenta del siglo XVIII el enterramiento en los templos y la construcción de cementerios en el exterior de las ciudades fue motivo de un amplio debate con implicaciones sanitarias, religiosas y sociológicas. El matemático catalán Benito Bails, titular de la Cátedra de Matemáticas de la Real Academia de San Fernando, intervino activamente en la polémica con la traducción en 1781 de la obra del portugués Antonio Ribeiro Sanches, y la edición en 1785 de textos europeos y españoles contrarios a la inhumación de cadáveres en las iglesias.

The burial in the churches and the building of graveyards on the outskirts of the towns, during the eightys of the XVIII Century, was the object of wide discussion with sanitary, religious and sociologic implications. The Catalonian mathematic Benito Bails, professor of Mathematics in the Royal Academy of San Fernando, took an active part in this polemic with the translation in 1781 of the Portuguese Antonio Ribeiro Sanches' play and the edition in 1785 of European and Spanish texts against the interment of bodies into the chapels.
