| Mario Benedetti’s private library in Madrid sheds new light on the relationships among the authors of the “poética coloquial” of the sixties (the characteristics of “colloquial poetry” have been analysed in some main works). Mario Benedetti himself interviewed several of these writers in his well-known book Poetas comunicantes (1971). All of these authors (Gelman, Parra, Pacheco, Retamar, Eliseo Diego, Cardenal?) have a strong presence in Benedetti’s library, which the poet donated to the Center for Latin American Studies named after him at the University of Alicante. The volumes of this library provide a new perspective for a better understanding of the connections established within this group of authors. The handwritten dedications to the Uruguayan poet as well as a number of significant underlined fragments and annotations made by Benedetti prove the existence of what he called “vasos comunicantes”. This article traces those relationships among the writers and studies them in connection with the aforementioned book of interviews. |
