La novel·la gràfica per a estimular la competència actitudinal de l’alumnat universitari respecte a una llengua minoritzada

Abstract

Learning a minority language, which suffers from a strong social disrepute, is often predetermined by low motivation, so teachers must consider strategies to strengthen students’ attitudinal competence. Regarding Catalan learning, especially in a territory largely detached from identity affection towards this language such as in the south of the Valencian Country (where Universitat d’Alacant is the referential space for higher education in terms of language instruction), teachers have usually promoted actions based on a folklorizing model which no longer connects with students’ interests. For this reason, this paper addresses mass culture in order to make derive a theoretical reflection on the motivating potential this type of cultural examples possess, so that emotional bonds may be achieved by developing a relevant collective imaginary through cinema, pop music, etc. Specifically, we will focus on the analysis of graphic novels as vehicles which are capable of instilling contemporary yearnings, thanks to multimodal language and both formal and thematic diversity, aspects which may encourage students’ participation and, therefore, their critical ability. Thus, according to a paradigm which integrates language and contents, we will propose to introduce, in the lecture room, works which may connect with students’ ideological concerns, mainly items created by women based on gender perspective filtered through collective memory, racialization and labour rights.
