| Over the last few years, the relationship between citizens and politics in several European countries has experienced a significant deterioration. This study shows that one of the reasons behind it is the distrust towards the State, as expressed by the executive, legislative and judicial powers. With the exception of the Nordic countries, such distrust is widespread, and it is particularly intense in post-communist countries where the hasty implementation of a minimalist instrumental definition of democracy clashes with the expectations of the citizens, who define democracy on the basis of their goals and achievements: political, economic and social rights. This crisis of trust in the actual functioning of the State has a direct effect on the citizens' satisfaction with democracy and their willingness to take part in politics. |
