| Conceived as an effective instrument for the Christianization of indigenous population, Evangelization Theatre was the first fully mestizo cultural product of New Spain. In its development, missionaries (particularly the Franciscans) tended to adapt brief Spanish dramatic forms to an American context, integrating them into broader celebratory frameworks having a wide range of characteristics across the 16th Century in accordance with, on the one hand, the diverse stages of the evangelization process and, on the other hand, the specific needs of the different areas of the viceroyalty. This article considers some of these brief theatrical forms based on their functionality within the distinct types of events held during the first century of the colony. |
