La polémica ilustrada sobre la reliquia de la Santa Faz de Alicante: un ataque a la Compañía de Jesús

Abstract

A medidados del siglo XVIII se suscitó una agria polémica entre el jesuita José Fabiani y el canónigo valenciano Agustín Sales sobre la autenticidad de la reliquia venerada en el monasterio de la Santa Faz de Alicante. El juicio crítico de Sales, una vez conocido por las órdenes religiosas establecidas en la ciudad, fue utilizado para acusar de laxismo al jesuita, quien defendía un culto mayor que el que correspondía al lienzo verónico.

In the middle of the 18th Century, a great controversy about the authenticity of the revered treasure in the Santa faz Monastery of Alicante emerged between the Jesuit José Fabiani and the Valencian Canon Agustín Sales. When the religious orders were made aware of Sales's final judgement, they used it to accuse the Jesuit of laxity who, in turn, argued that the Holy Cloth of Verónica should be worshipped more than it was.
