Individuo, nación y religión en el liberalismo español, 1808-1868

Abstract

Los autores abordan un problema clave de la hipótesis del «débil» Estado liberal en España: la supuesta subordinación de la nación a la identidad católica prepolítica. El artículo argumenta que la intolerancia religiosa debe entenderse en el marco del liberalismo histórico. De hecho, permitió que el Estado regulase el alcance del confesionalismo y la autoridad social de la Iglesia. Los autores rechazan la supuesta continuidad entre el antiguo régimen y el auge neocatólico. Al contrario, la unidad religiosa, frente a la libertad individual de cultos, fue reivindicada por círculos liberales, preocupados por la estabilidad de la política y el orden social.

The authors address one of the key issues present within the theory of the «weak» Spanish liberal state. This is the idea that the nation was subordinated to a Catholic pre-political identity. This article argues that religious intolerance should be understood within the framework of historical liberalism, which enabled the state to regulate the scope of confessionalism and the social authority of the Church. The authors reject the supposed continuity from Old Regime to the rise of neo-Catholicism. On the contrary, liberals proclaimed religious unity —as opposed to freedom of religion— in order to ensure political stability and social order.
