| The Almansa dam, completed in 1586, is considered the oldest of the modern European reservoirs and a precursor to the rest of the Spanish dams built during the 16th and 17th centuries. In the second half of the 18th century it measured 12.5 m in height, which was extended to the current 20.69 m. This was thanks to the project and direction of the architect Bartolomé Rivelles, a prominent member of the Royal Academies of San Fernando (Madrid) and San Carlos (Valencia). This article aims to analyse the gestation process of the re-growth works of 1788, together with the role of the architect Rivelles and the technical details of his project, with special mention of the plans, hitherto unpublished. The conclusions attempt to show that the regrowth of the Almansa dam was one of the most successful chapters in the Spanish hydraulic history of the 18th century. |
