Los inicios de la vacunación contra la viruela en Burgos (1801-1802)

Abstract

Ignacio María Ruiz de Luzuriaga, secretario de la Real Academia de Medicina de Madrid, es considerado por la historiografía médica como una de las figuras centrales en la propagación y difusión tanto de la técnica jenneriana como de la materia vacunal. El volumen documental que acumuló, catalogado y conservado como «Papeles de la vacuna», muestra una red de corresponsales a quienes remitía vacuna e información sobre la técnica vacunal a cambio de noticias sobre sus progresos y experiencias. Este estudio de caso analiza las cartas remitidas por Juana Manuela Villachica y Llaguno, noble burgalesa interesada en proteger de la viruela a su entorno familiar y que junto con Prudencio Valderrama, médico de la familia y del Cabildo Catedralicio, contribuyó a propagar la vacuna en la provincia de Burgos. El epistolario permite relatar las circunstancias que facilitaron las primeras vacunaciones en el municipio burgalés y las inquietudes suscitadas entre la población durante 1801-1802.

Ignacio María Ruiz de Luzuriaga, secretary of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Madrid, is considered by the medical historiography as one of the central figures in the propagation and diffusion of both the jennerian technique and the vaccine material. The volume of documents that accumulated, cataloged and preserved as ‘Papeles de la vacuna’, shows a network of correspondents to whom he sent vaccine and information on the vaccination technique in exchange for news of their progress and experiences. This study analyzes the letters sent by Juana Manuela Villachica y Llaguno, interested in protecting from smallpox their family environment and that together with Prudencio Valderrama, doctor of the family and of the Cabildo Catedralicio, contributed to the spread of the vaccine in the province of Burgos. The epistolary relates the circumstances that facilitated the first vaccinations in the municipality of Burgos and the concerns raised among the population during 1801-1802.
