Iglesia, espiritualidad y materialidad en el mediodía del Reino de Valencia (siglo XIV e inicios del siglo XVI)

Abstract

El miedo a desaparecer del mundo súbitamente fue una de las ansiedades que más presentes debieron estar en la vida cotidiana de los hombres y mujeres del medievo hispano. En el sur Reino de Valencia entre los siglos XIV y XV, como en otros escenarios peninsulares, el temor ante la no existencia se resuelve parcialmente en la resolución de los conflictos inmediatos y en la emisión de testamento y de otros documentos anejos (codicilos e inventarios postmortem), una práctica heredera del derecho romano y que ha llegado hasta nuestros días. Este tipo de documentación es de gran interés porque contribuye a comprender mejor a los individuos medievales. Permite valorar, entre muchos otros aspectos, rasgos identitarios, ideológicos y, especialmente, materiales, que nos acercan a las realidades cotidianas concretas de las sociedades medievales cristianas en un espacio psicológico y geopolítico establecido por la frontera entre reinos.

The afraid to die suddenly was one of the most important anxieties in the daily lives of the men and women of the Hispanic Middle Age. In the south of the Kingdom of Valencia between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, as in other places of Spain, the fear of non-existence is partially resolved in the resolution of the immediate conflicts and the making of a will and other relevant documents (codicils and inventories postmortem), a practice started by Romans that has survived to this day. This type of documents are very interesting because they help to a better understanding of medieval people. It contributes to value, among other aspects, identity, ideological and especially material features that bring us to the everyday realities of medieval Christian society in a psychological and geopolitical space established by the border between realms.
