La diversidad de mosasaurios ibéricos

Abstract

La Península Ibérica presenta una interesante riqueza potencial en cuanto a fósiles de mosasaurios, aunque estos se reduzcan a restos fragmentarios axiales o coronas dentarias. De todas maneras es importante resaltar el valor de dichos restos a la hora de realizar estudios estratigráficos, tafonómicos, taxonómicos y de diversidad. Gracias a estos fósiles encontrados se puede sugerir que en la Península Ibérica sí existió una diversidad de mosasaurios de cierta relevancia al final del Cretácico, con al menos 7 taxones diferentes. Entre estos restos ibéricos aparece el registro más al sur del hemisferio norte de un tilosaurino, y un diente del pterigoides de un Prognathodon encontrado en la Comunidad Valenciana que amplía el registro fósil de mosasaurios en la Península Ibérica. También es importante resaltar que en la Península Ibérica se encuentra el yacimiento del Maastrichtiense más rico del sur de Europa en cuanto a fósiles y diversidad de mosasaurios: Albaina, en la cantera de Laño (norte de España).

The Iberian Peninsula presents an impressive potential richness in terms of mosasaur remains, although all of them are fragmentary axial remains or teeth crowns. However, it is important to highlight the value of these fossils when studying stratigraphy, taphonomy, taxonomy or diversity. Thanks to these mosasaur remains we can hypothesise the presence of a relevant mosasaur diversity at the end of the Cretaceous in the Iberian Peninsula with, at least, 7 different taxa. Here we can find the most southern tilosaurine record found in the northern hemisphere, and a pterygoid tooth of a Prognathodon found in the Comunidad Valenciana which widen the previously known Iberian mosasaur fossil record. It is also important to highlight the presence in the Iberian Peninsula of the richest fossil site from the Maastrichtian of south Europe in terms of fossil remains and diversity of mosasaurs: Albaina, in the Laño quarry (north Spain).
