Agua y paisaje en la Vega Baja del Segura: la Huerta sitiada

Abstract

La Vega Baja del río Segura se identifica con un patrón de paisaje asociado a la Huerta, desarrollado a lo largo de siglos y caracterizado por una producción de regadío intensivo pese a las adversas condiciones territoriales (almarjal) y climatológicas (aridez). Las poblaciones de la zona han experimentado una transformación radical, física y de mentalidad, en los últimos treinta años. Los asentamientos urbanos han mutando de un entorno peri-agrícola, a otro productivo periurbano, en el que nuevos usos del suelo han fragmentado paulatinamente el paisaje local. El presente trabajo plantea el estudio del sector más próximo a la costa con el objetivo de analizar el proceso de intrusión de los modelos de desarrollo que caracterizan a las urbanizaciones residenciales emplazadas en la franja costera. La cuantificación del espacio de Huerta desaparecido nos permite documentar esta dinámica en la que se genera un paisaje sitiado, donde está en peligro el tradicional continuo agrícola. El color verde de los cultivos tiene un papel fundamental como referente de la naturaleza y elemento cautivador que sustituye al papel que representa el azul del mar en el litoral, en la que es una de las regiones más secas de Europa.

The Vega Baja of the Segura River has a distinguishing Huerta landscape pattern that has been developed over centuries and is characterized by a successful intensive irrigated agriculture that coped with adverse weather and territorial conditions. The territory has undergone a dramatic change during the last twenty years shifting from a peri-agricultural homogeneous environment to a peri-urban agriculture. The radical change in the population mind-set - replacing agricultural production with other land uses - is besieging the Huerta landscape. This paper approaches the study of the Vega Baja valley by focusing on four key factors: Landscape, Agriculture, Habitat and Tourism. The goal is to analyse the process of Huerta fragmentation and loss of territorial values that have resulted from the encroaching inland development of urbanizations a few kilometres from the coast. The green canopies provided by the Huertas are gradually disappearing and with them the green oasis that made these areas attractive to developers in the first place, a symbol of a sustainable green productive environment in one of the most arid regions of Europe.
