Incidencia de episodios meteorológicos catastróficos en la actividad agraria del Valle del Vinalopó (Alicante)

Abstract

La actividad agraria del Valle del Vinalopó (Alicante) condicionada básicamente por los problemas del agua -sobreexplotación de acuíferos, aprovechamiento de sobrantes del río Segura-, se ha visto seriamente afectada, en la última década por una sucesión de eventos meteorológicos de carácter extraordinario que han puesto de manifiesto el precario equilibrio existente, en algunas área de este espacio subregional, entre medio natural y aprovechamiento humana. Estos sucesos atmosféricos de consecuencias catastróficas determinan no sólo la inmediata pérdida de nivel de renta de los agricultores sino asimismo, la propia ubicación territorial de los cultivos e, incluso, el abandono de tierras. El trabajo analiza sus causas meteorológicas, las consecuencias económicas en los cultivos y las prácticas llevadas a cabo con objeto de mitigar efectos.

The farming activity in the Vinalopó Valley (Alicante), which is basically conditioned by water problems (overexploitaition of the aquiferous layers, harnessing of surplusses from The Segura river), has been seriously jeopardized, within the last decade, by a series of meteorological events, of an extraordinaty character, which have revealed the precarious balance, existing in some areas of this subregional space, between the natural environment and its human use through farming. Said atmospheric events of dramatic consequenses have brought about, not only the inmediate fall of the farmers'income level, but also variation in the very Iocalisation of the crops and even, prossibly, the abandonment of farming in some cases. This paper analyses both the meteorological phenomena which caused the development of such episodes -hail, frost, and violent rains- and their economical outcome, as well as the measures which have been carried out so as to mitigate their consequenses.
