La ciudad y los autos de fe en tres ejemplos de la Lima colonial

Abstract

Una serie de testimonios, como las Relaciones de autos de fe, y otros documentos que dan cuenta de estas celebraciones y "triunfos del Santo Oficio", construyen en la sociedad colonial, a imagen de la Metrópoli, una transmisión de ceremonias efímeras que quisieron ser convertidas en trascendentes y perpetuas por la letra impresa, por un libro que muchas veces se escribía con convenciones explícitas en las que se relataba el cortejo y su anuncio, sus recorridos, los lugares principales de la ciudad, la disposición jerárquica de la procesión, el orden que ocupaban las personalidades, los reos, el pueblo ... Basándonos en tres autos de fe de Lima, entre los siglos XVII y XVIII, intentamos precisar perspectivas de la urbs y la civitas, del espacio urbano y el teatro humano de la ciudad colonial con las implicaciones sociales que la historia iba determinando.

A series of testimonies, such as the Relaciones de autos de fe and other documents that narrate these celebrations and "triumphs of the Holy Office", intend to present ephemeral ceremonies as transcendent and perpetual using the printed word and following the image of the Metropolis in colonial society. These texts reported the procession and its announcement, its routes, the main places in the city, the hierarchical arrangement of the procession, the order in which the personalities, the prisoners and the people were placed, often written with explicit conventions. Based on three autos de fe from Lima, between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, I pinpoint perspectives of the urbs and the civitas, the urban space and the human theatre of the colonial city with the social implications that history was determining.
