Abstract: RC slabs can be subjected to transverse loads and tensile in-plane forces, as it occurs in top slabs of continuous bridges under negative moments. Tensile forces can reduce the shear or punching capacity of the slab, aspect not yet studied. A theoretical and experimental investigation has been carried out, in which 10 slabs have been tested under a point load and different degrees of tensile force. The results of five axisymmetrically supported slabs of 1.65x1.65x0.12m are presented. Numerical predictions were made with FEA software ABAQUS and, in addition, the Compression Chord Capacity Mechanical Model CCCM, was extended to account for the effect of in-plane tensile forces. The experimental results showed that the ultimate punching load diminished linearly with the applied tensile force applied and that, after yielding of longitudinal reinforcement such reduction was higher.
