The introduction of the Catalan language into Valencian schools meant that teachers had to look for materials to teach in that language. As in other places, Valencian teachers turned to popular literature to teach the language and other subjects in Catalan; however, they also used Valencian folklore as a way to change the educational model and to create individuals aware of their own identity. Consequently, from the 1980s there was a flowering of folklore collections aimed at young audiences. These collections sometimes have prologues or introductions that explain why it is necessary to introduce folklore into the classroom, namely because it is considered an essential tool for recovering collective identity. These prologues constantly refer to the relation between folklore and identity, a relation that is still emphasised in more recent publications. The present article analyses these kinds of collection and the context that led to their production and thus seeks to explain an essential part of the recent history of popular Valencian culture.
