Clero y familia en la archidiócesis de Toledo y sus sufragáneas: un estudio a través de los nombramientos eclesiásticos de Real Patronato (1760-1775)

Abstract: 
Durante el Antiguo Régimen, la elección del estado eclesiástico y el desarrollo de una carrera dentro de la Iglesia, lejos de responder a meras razones vocacionales, formaban parte de estrategias diseñadas por los parientes del clérigo en beneficio de este individuo y del conjunto familiar. Esta dinámica, aunque constante en el tiempo, hubo de adaptarse a las circunstancias de cada momento y lugar. En la mayoría de las diócesis españolas, el Concordato de 1753 y la consecución del llamado Patronato Universal por parte de los titulares de la monarquía hispánica supusieron cambios significativos en este sentido, los cuales se vieron acentuados durante el reinado de Carlos III. Nuestro estudio se centra precisamente en la primera mitad de este período y, aunque acotado al territorio compuesto por la archidiócesis de Toledo y sus sufragáneas, pretende ofrecer una aproximación a la relación entre el clérigo y su familia válida para el conjunto del territorio español dentro del marco de las provisiones beneficiales que correspondían al Real Patronato.
During the Old Regime, the election of the ecclesiastical state and the development of a career in the Church, far from responding to mere vocational reasons, were both part of the strategies designed by the relatives of the cleric in benefit of the individual and his family. This dynamic, although constant in time, had to adapt to the circumstances of the moment and the place. In most of the Spanish dioceses, the Concordat of 1753 and the achievement of the so called Universal Patronage on behalf of the Spanish monarchy assumed significant changes in this respect, particularly pronounced during the reign of King Charles III of Spain. Our study focuses precisely on the first half of this period and, although limited to the territory comprising the archdiocese of Toledo and its suffragans, it aims to offer an approach to the relationship between the clergy and his family, valid for the whole of the Spanish territory within the framework of the beneficial provisions corresponding to the Royal Patronage.
