Abstract: 
La necesidad de descanso del cuidador está bien establecida en la literatura y los servicios de respiro son una respuesta a esta necesidad, no obstante, aunque son los más necesitados, son poco usados; diversos estudios han indagado sus causas. La bibliografía muestra que utilizarlos implica un proceso con diversas etapas y variaciones, y que es un tema cultural, social y no técnico. La necesidad de un enfoque centrado en el cuidador es la conclusión a la que llegan los estudios sobre el respiro de los cuidadores. El respiro se ha ofertado, como un servicio, con poca consideración por el punto de vista del cuidador y sin tener en cuenta el contexto del cuidado familiar. Para ayudar a los cuidadores, se han de encontrar maneras de respiro que sean más coherentes con sus vidas, los estudios cualitativos contribuyen a encontrar dichas maneras y llenan un vacío en la literatura sobre el cuidado familiar.
Caregivers' need for rest is well established in the literature and respite services are a response to this need. Nevertheless, although these services are the most needed, they are not well used and the several studies have inquiry its causes. Bibliography shows that using these services implies a process with stages and different variations and that it is a cultural, social issue and not a technical one. Studies on respite care conclude the need for a caregiver centred approach. Respite is offered as a service with little consideration for caregiver's point of view and consideration of the caregiving context. To help caregivers, ways of offering services more coherent with their lives must be found. Qualitative studies contribute to find these ways and fill a gap in the literature in family care.
