| The French Revolution of 1789, in spite of being an event framed in the concrete territory of France, was a catalyst for the movement of social structures that the Old Regime proposed in all of Europe. With it, the freedom and equality of all citizens before the law was established, regardless of their social origin. In order to demonstrate these renewing airs that represented the end of an obsolete political system, both men and women had to adapt to the new demands of the time, changing their dress styles, as this is the clearest and most visible sign reflecting the new ways of thinking. The baroque dress, full of rich ornaments and bright colours, vanished to make way for the light and vaporous dresses that represented a society related to the values of Liberté, égalité et fraternité. |
