Ni restaurada, ni abolida. Los últimos años de la Inquisición española (1823-1834)

Abstract

Cuando Fernando VII retornó al trono en 1823, antiguos miembros de la Inquisición y muchos eclesiásticos solicitaron el restablecimiento del histórico tribunal. El monarca, sin embargo, no mostró interés por restaurarlo y al tiempo mantuvo una actitud permisiva ante la creación de otros organismos que ejercieron funciones en cierto modo similares a la antigua Inquisición, en especial la policía. El deseo del rey de gobernar como monarca absoluto fue el factor decisivo que impidió el retorno de la Inquisición.

When Fernando VII returned to the throne, former inquisitorial officers and a lot of ecclesiastics expressed their desire to resume their activities in conformance with past practices. The monarch, however, showed little interest in restoring the lnquisition but maintained a permissive attitude with respect to the creation of new institutions, which, to a certain degree, were quite similar to the old tribunal particularly the police. In spite of the efforts of such officials, the return of absolutism was the crucial factor that prevented the restoration of the lnquisition.
