Children’s Literature and Literary Competence Development: a Didactic Proposal Using the Picture Book Amazing Grace in Primary Education

Abstract

Aquest article pretén destacar la manera, com a mestres, de guiar els estudiants en els processos de creació de significat mitjançant l’ús que es pot fer dels àlbums il·lustrats, ja que són motivadors i els ajuden a aconseguir l’aprenentatge significatiu mentre gaudeixen de la llengua, el contingut i la literatura en la classe d’anglés. Introduïm l’àlbum il·lustrat Amazing Grace, escrit per Mary Hoffman i il·lustrat per Caroline Binch, als nostres estudiants de Primària en la classe d’anglés. D’altra banda, es presenten —per tal d’ajudar-los a millorar les seues cinc habilitats d’alfabetització (llegir, escriure, escoltar, parlar i pensar) i alhora desenvolupen la competència literària— el model de Reyes per a desenvolupar la competència literària. Aquest és un model triangular que parteix de la idea que el lector estableix un diàleg amb el text.

This work pretends to highlight how we, as teachers, guide our students in making-meaning processes by using picture books because they are motivating and they help them achieve meaningful learning while enjoying the language, the content and literature in the English class. We introduce the picture book Amazing Grace, written by Mary Hoffman and illustrated by Caroline Binch, to our Primary School students in the English class. Moreover, we present —in order to help them improving their five literacy skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking and thinking) at the same time that they are developing their literary competence— the Reyes’ model for the development of Literary Competence. This is a triangular model that gives support to the idea that the reader establishes a dialogue with the text.
