Bastión y ciudad: Los proyectos para las fortificaciones de Fuenterrabía a finales del siglo XVI

Abstract

A finales del siglo XVI Felipe II decidió impulsar una transformación de las fortificaciones encargadas de la defensa de la frontera con Francia. Pamplona, Fuenterrabía y San Sebastián recibieron visitas de los mejores ingenieros del momento. En esta investigación se exponen y dibujan hipótesis, ante la falta de documentación, de los proyectos que el Fratín y Tiburcio Spannocchi redactaron para Fuenterrabía. El primero redactó en 1572 un ambicioso proyecto e inició las obras del baluarte de San Felipe. En 1580 Spannocchi continuó las obras y redactó un nuevo proyecto, con la posibilidad de duplicar el área urbana con el nuevo recinto proyectado.

At the end of the 16th Century Felipe II decided to support a change to the fortifications entrusted with the defence of the border with France. The best engineers at the time visited Pamplona, Fuenterrabía and San Sebastián. This study sets out and draws the hypothesis of the projects that the Fratín and Tiburcio Spannocchi prepared for Fuenterrabía. The first one drew up an initial project and started the works on the bastion of San Felipe. In 1580 Spannocchi continued the works and designed a new project, with the possibility of duplicating the urban area with the new proposed enclosure.
