El arpa y la sombra: procesos intertextuales en la construcción del personaje de Cristobal Colón

Abstract

El arpa y la sombra, de Alejo Carpentier, narra el intento fallido de beatificación de Cristóbal Colón por parte de Pío IX y León XIII, articulando una red amplia de intertextos que van conformando progresivamente la imagen del Almirante. El libro de Cristóbal Colón, de Paul Claudel, y los Diarios del propio Colón, se articulan como intertextos fundamentales para el desarrollo de las tres partes de la novela: “El arpa”, “La mano” y “La sombra”. Conviven en la obra diversos grados de intertextualidad además de un corpus extenso de referencias, citas y alusiones, más o menos explícitas, dependiendo del momento narrativo. Todo con el objetivo de deconstruir y desmitificar la imagen tradicional para, finalmente, presentar una visión más crítica del Almirante a través del juego intertextual.

By means of a broad net of intertexts, the image of the Admiral gradually takes shape. El libro de Cristóbal Colón by Paul Claudel and Diarios by Columbus himself are articulated as fundamental intertexts for the development of the three parts of the novel: “The harp”, “The hand” and “The shadow”. Sundry degrees of intertextuality coexist in the book together with a vast corpus of references, quotes and allusions, more or less explicit depending on the narrative moment. The aim of all this is to deconstruct and demystify the traditional image. The final purpose is to display a more critical view of the Admiral through intertextual coordination.
