Evidencialitat i cortesia el verb català témer del segle XV a l’actualitat

Abstract

Aquest estudi descriu el procés de canvi semàntic pel qual el verb català témer, partint d’un significat de predicció (que es desenvolupà en català antic paral·lelament a l’espanyol, el portuguès o l’italià: ‘[Algú] considerar com a possible [una cosa negativa]’), esdevindrà marcador de cortesia a partir del segle XV. Amb l’objectiu de descriure aquest procés, fonamentem la nostra anàlisi en un corpus d’exemples del verb témer del català antic i modern obtinguts del Corpus Informatitzat Multilingüe de Textos Antics i Contemporanis (CIMTAC), els quals són interpretats mitjançant les eines teòriques que ens aporten la Lingüística Cognitiva i la Gramàtica de Construccions basada en l’ús, d’acord amb la proposta de Traugott i Trousdale, la Teoria del Canvi Semàntic de la Inferència Invitada (TCSII) de Traugott (2012) i el concepte d’intersubjectivitat (Traugott 2010). La nostra anàlisi sobre el valor de cortesía expressat per témer incorpora, així mateix, la teoria de la cortesia de Brown i Levinson, així com la proposta més recent de Wierzbicka.

The present study describes the semantic change process through which the Catalan verb témer, starting from the prediction meaning (that it developed in Old Catalan in parallel to Spanish, Portuguese or Italian: ‘[Algú] considerar com a possible [una cosa negativa]’ [Someone] to consider [a negative thing] possible; DDLC, s.v. témer), will become a politeness marker since the 15th century. With a view to explain this process, an analysis will be performed about a group of examples with the verb témer from Old and Modern Catalan retrieved from the Corpus Informatitzat Multilingüe de Textos Antics i Contemporanis (CIMTAC) [Multilingual Computerized Corpus of Old and Contemporary Texts], interpreting them by means of the theoretical tools provided to us by Cognitive Linguistics and used-based Construction Grammar in accordance with the proposal by Traugott and Trousdale, Traugott’s Invited Inferencing Theory of Semantic Change (IITSC) (2012), and the concept of intersubjectivity (Traugott 2010). Our analysis about the meaning of politeness expressed by témer will also incorporate Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory, as well as the proposal more recently made by Wierzbicka.
