Abstract

Este trabajo es una revisión general de la información científica y de enfermería que se debe tener para realizar Cuidados Culturales. Queda mucho por aprender, pero en cualquier caso, estos son los puntos fundamentales y sobresalientes que se deben ir aumentando con experiencia práctica. A la vez que entramos en el siglo 21, nos asentamos en el punto crítico de enormes cambios demográficos, sociales y culturales. Estos cambios jugarán un papel dramático y dualista en la práctica de cuidados enfermeros a pacientes, familias y comunidades. Las naciones de todo el mundo -la anterior Unión Soviética, la anterior Yugoslavia, Ruanda, Zaire y el Medio Este por nombrar unas pocas- luchan, a veces de forma violenta, con la cuestión de la diversidad cultural, racial, étnica, y/o religiosa. Los Cuidados Culturales es un concepto que describe el tipo de cuidados en la enfermería profesional que son culturalmente sensibles, culturalmente congruentes, y culturalmente competentes.

This presentation is a comprehensive overview of the scientific and nursing information that we must have to deliver Cultural Care. There is much to learn, and these are the foundation and salient points that must then grow with practical experience. As we enter the 21st century, we are perched on the cutting edge of enormous demographic, social and cultural changes. These changes will play dramatic and dualistic roles in the delivery of nursing care to patients, their families, and communities. Nations around the globe, struggle, often violently, with the issues of cultural, racial, ethnic, and religious diversity. Cultural Care means culturally sensitive, culturally appropriate, and culturally competent. Cultural Care is imperative to meet the complex nursing care needs of a given person and family. It is the provision of nursing care across cultural boundaries and takes into account the context in which the patient lives as well as the situations in which the patient's health problems arise.
