Reacciones en España ante la expulsión de los jesuitas de Francia

Abstract

Los sucesos que afectaron a los jesuitas en Portugal y Francia fueron seguidos con curiosidad e interés en los ambientes cultos españoles. A través de la correspondencia cruzada entre Gregorio Mayans y diversos personajes, entre los que se encontraban el obispo Asensio Sales, el bibliotecario real Martínez Pingarrón, y el jesuita P. Juan Bautista Gener, y otros, se analizan las actitudes de simpatía o antipatía que suscitaban las medidas antijesuíticas y la gestación de un ambiente proclive a la expulsión. Así mismo, se trata de la repercusión de la consulta del Consejo de Castilla sobre los jesuitas franceses exiliados en España, con referencia al eco que produjo en el Provincial de Aquitania, el P. Carlos Nectoux, residente en San Sebastián.

Educated circles in Spain followed the events affecting the Jesuits in Portugal and France with curiosity and interest. The attitudes of sympathy and antipathy aroused by the anti- Jesuit measures, and the birth of an atmosphere in favour of the expulsion were analysed in the correspondence between Gregorio Mayans and various people, among whom were the Bishop Asensio Sales, the Royal Librarian Martínez Pingarrón and the Jesuit Priest Juan Bautista Gener. In the same way, the repercussion of the consultation carried out by the Castilla Council about the French Jesuits exiled in Spain, with reference to the echo caused in the Provincial of Aquitaine Father Carlos Nectoux, resident in San Sebastián is analysed.
