Elx: la ciutat i el seu territori agrícola. Relectura d'una cooperació mil·lenària

Abstract

La ciutat d’Elx es retrotrau més enllà del bimil·lenari, encara que aquesta síntesi només s’ocupa del període basat en l’economia agrària, que inclou des de la romanització fins a finals del segle XIX. En la formació de la ciutat històrica se succeeixen quatre fites singulars, que inclouen algun canvi d’emplaçament –des de la romana Ilici (l’Alcúdia) a l’Elx actual– i l’edificació d’una ciutat històrica polinuclear a causa de polítiques urbanes i socials medievals: la creació de la Vila emmurallada musulmana en el s. VIII-IX i de la Moreria en el s. XIII, tots dos nuclis amb carrers ortogonals per la sobreimposició damunt de territoris anteriorment centuriats. L’última fita correspon a una gran expansió urbana durant el segle XVIII, amb l’edificació a un costat i a l’altre del riu Vinalopó: el barri del Pla o de Santa Teresa en terrenys de secà a la dreta del llit i diversos barris sobre horts de palmeres a l’esquerra del riu, com són els del Clero, de Conrado, de Sarabia i del Rector. Com a base econòmica d’aquesta singular creació urbana, s’erigeix l’agricultura, sobretot amb el regadiu del Vinalopó, la implantació del qual es palesa en la centuriatio romana, i després salvaguardat per les societats musulmana (des del s. VIII) i cristiana (des del s. XIII), que primen la seua necessària conservació pel medi natural àrid, a pesar de la mala qualitat, però úniques, d’aquestes aigües salobres.

The city of Elx goes back more than two thousand years; however, the present synthesis focuses solely on the period based on an agrarian economy, stretching from Roman times until the late nineteenth century. The formation of the historic city was marked by four important milestones, including a change of location from the Roman city of Ilici (l’Alcúdia) to the present day site of Elx, the construction of a historic multi-centred city as a result of medieval urban and social policies, and the creation of the Muslim Vila murada in the eighth to ninth centuries and the Moorish quarter in the thirteenth century, both centres based on an orthogonal street grid laid out over the former Roman land divisions. The last milestone was the substantial urban expansion which took place during the eighteenth century, when buildings were erected on both sides of the river Vinalopó: the Barri del Pla or de Santa Teresa on unirrigated land on the right bank of the river, and neighbourhoods built on the palm groves on the left bank of the river, such as the Clero, de Conrado, de Sarabia and del Rector. Agriculture formed the economic base of this unique urban creation, above all thanks to irrigation from the Vinalopó River, the construction of which is evident in the Roman centuriatio. This irrigation system was preserved by the Muslims (from the eighth century) and the Christians (from the thirteenth century); despite the poor quality of the brackish water it contained, both societies gave great importance to its necessary conservation as the sole source of water in an arid environment.
