“La maldición de Babel”. Crónicas periodísticas del nacionalismo lingüístico español

Abstract

Uno de los asuntos más polémicos y de mayor alcance social y cultural en relación con las lenguas en España ha sido el denominado conflicto lingüístico: su presencia en la prensa y, en general, en los medios de comunicación ha sido constante desde finales de los años setenta. En efecto, la prensa, en tanto que una de las instituciones más influyentes en la sociedad contemporánea, ha sido y sigue siendo un espacio propicio para tratar sobre la lengua en cualquiera de sus aspectos. A partir de la hipótesis de que los textos metalingüísticos en la prensa son una fuente privilegiada para estudiar la creación y propagación de ideologías sobre la lengua, se analiza el papel del columnismo lingüístico en la construcción y reproducción de una visión ideológica sobre el castellano que la enfrenta social y lingüísticamente al resto de lenguas del Estado. Se estudia un corpus formado por 154 textos desde una perspectiva sociolingüística y crítico-discursiva, se analizarán los recursos sobre los que se sostiene la construcción y la organización argumentativa del discurso sobre las lenguas del Estado en la España contemporánea y su relación con los mitos del idioma.

One of the issues that is most controversial and that has the greatest social and cultural impact with regard to languages in Spain has been the so-called linguistic conflict, which has had a constant presence in the press and the media in general since the end of the 1970s. The press, as one of the most influential institutions in contemporary society, has been and remains a forum on linguistic issues, in all its facets. Based on the hypothesis that the metalinguistic texts in the press are a prime source for studying the creation and propagation of ideologies around language, we analyse the role of opinion articles covering language issues in the construction and reproduction of an ideological vision around Spanish which pits it, socially and linguistically, against the other languages of Spain. We study a corpus of 154 texts from a sociolinguistic and critical discourse-based standpoint, and analyse the foundations that provide the base for the construction and reasoning for the discourse on the languages of contemporary Spain and their relationship with the myths of language.
