Secularización y mentalidades en el sexenio democrático: Alicante (1868-1875)

Abstract

La Revolución de 1868 abrió un periodo en el que se acometieron cambios muy importantes en materia de secularización. La idea de que España debía modernizarse pasaba por una necesaria erradicación del poder eclesiástico de la esfera civil. Los revolucionarios reclamaban en nombre del progreso la regeneración de la sociedad. Construyeron un referente religioso muy amplio en el cual, sin abandonar en muchos casos el catolicismo, tenían cabida diversas propuestas que abogaban por la convivencia entre razón y fe. La pluralidad y la gran cantidad de matices fueron las notas dominantes a la hora de presentar esa regeneración. La muerte y el matrimonio, dos momentos clave en la vida del hombre, permiten un primer acercamiento a la secularización acometida desde las instituciones y su impacto sobre las mentalidades. Los testamentos y el registro civil cuestionan la tradicional visión de una España ultracatólica, así como también las actuaciones y percepciones de los individuos con mayor capacidad para influir sobre los acontecimientos del momento. Todo ello se constata en apartados tan diversos como las fiestas, la moral o el espiritismo, uno de los paradigmas reformistas más importantes, en la línea que abogaba por la secularización inscrita en el marco religioso. La secularización en el Sexenio aparece como un proyecto ambiguo, que careció de tiempo y medios para asentarse y en el que conviven formas nuevas y viejas, lo cual no anula la voluntad decidida de sus impulsores a realizar transformaciones reales de la sociedad.

The secularization in the Sexenio appears like an ambiguous project, that lacked time and medium to be written down and in which live together you form new and old, which does not annul the determined will of its promoters to carry out real transformations of the society.
